Earl, was the sixth child of Louis J. and Celima La Faive (nee Germain), and was born on the sixth day of June in the little village of Grand Marais, which was situated in the county of Alger in the upper peninsula of Michigan.
Earl lived the first ten years of his life in this village area, the first five years living in the family homestead in the village itself, and the next five years on the dairy farm ownedby R.E. Schneider which was located two miles west of the village.
Earl moved with his family to the city of Detroit, arriving on the fourth day of October in 1917 and assumed city life in the area now known as Pole town, living there in two residences; one year on Piquette Ave. and the other year on Harper Ave., at the first near and the second at the corner of Moran Ave. The area at the time was populated mostly by individuals of Polishdescent and was surrounded by various factories, including Packard Motor Car Co., the Briggs Body Plant, the Dodge Brothers Plant in Hamtramck, which was immediately to the north, and various other small industries to the south.
The next two years the family lived for one year on Concord Ave. and then a few months on Mack Ave. at the corner of Beaufaite. In 1920 the La Faive family moved into their home on Holcomb Ave. the number of which was 4908 between the streets of Forest and Warren Ave. This was to be the family home from 1920 until the death of Louis in 1953.
Earl attended the catholic schools in Detroit first at St. John the Evangelist from 1917 until 1919 and then Our Lady of Sorrows school in 1920 / 21 and with Graduation from the eighth grade enrolled in Sacred Heart Seminary in downtown Detroit and was a student their until late September of 1923 when he enrolled at St. Catherine's High school on the east side of Detroit graduating in 1925. In the fall of 1925 Earl enrolled in the University of Detroit to study a pre-legal course in preparation for entry into law school, which he accomplished in 1927 after two years in literary school and then for three years in the college of law. Earl graduated in 1930. He spent the summer preparing for the bar exam which was accomplished in September, andwas eventually accepted into the Michigan State bar in October. Thereafter Earl's occupation was the private practice of law for a period ending in 1972. Upon his retirement he still retained his license in Michigan to the year 1995 and the age of 87 years he still maintained his right to practice law in the state as well as the federal court system.
In 1924 Earl became acquainted with Elizabeth Jane Rider, who was to eventually become his wife. During the time Earl was attending college, his companionship with Elizabeth was very close and frequent, and continued thus until their marriage at St. Catherine's church on Sept 1, 1934.
After their marriage Earl and Elizabeth led a somewhat quiet life on the eastside of Detroit raising a family of five boys and one girl: the first child born in 1935 and the last in 1948.
Earl's first law office was located at the corner of Mack and Sheridan. He shared this building with his brothers Louis and Oscar who were partners in a home furnishings store on the first floor. In 1947 Earl moved to the law offices of Frank Moriarity. The Moriarity law offices were located at the northwest corner of Mack and Baldwin in a building which had previously been a bank. Earl shared this building with four other lawyers.
In 1951 Earl moved to the southeast corner of Mack and Crane, sharing a building with James Casey Insurance Agency where he remained until moving, along with Jim Casey to an office on Kelly road, across from Guardian Angel Church on Detroit's Northeast side. Upon the retirement of Jim Casey, Earl purchased a building on Kelly approximately two doors down. This building hadbeen owned and operated as a barber shop by Frank Balish who was also a neighbor of Earl's, living four houses down from 11400 Lansdowne, where Earl resided from 1947 until approximately 1961.
In 1968, Earl acquired a summer cottage on Sand Lake in Iosco County, approximately 150 miles from Detroit and used it sporadically as a summer cottage until 1972 when Earl retired from the full time practice of law. The cottage was then remodeled to allow for the use year round with the addition of a room on the front and the rear and the expansion of upstairs sleeping quarters to house visiting children and grandchildren.
It was during a trip to Detroit that Elizabeth died suddenly on the nineteenth of June in the year 1977.
In May of 1978 a close friend of Earl's, Al Noseda also passed away. Al and Ethel his wife had been lifelong friends of Earl and Elizabeth and with the death of Al and Elizabeth, Earl andEthel continued their friendship until their decision in 1979 to get married.
Their marriage took place on October 27, 1979 and was performed in the Immaculate Conception Church in Tawas City, Michigan.
They then took up residence in the Sand Lake Home, alternating their summer stay in the north with winter residence in Detroit until the year 1985 when they moved permanently to Detroit where they resided until passing, after 21 years of marriage.
