Oscar La Faive was born in Grand Marais on November 9, 1900 and was the third child of Louis and Celima. Oscar's early life was un eventful, and as was the case with most of the families of that time. The eldest son by necessity was made to contribute to the family welfare. Commencing in the year 1912 when Oscar was not yet a teenager.
After the family moved to Detroit in 1917 his work consisted primarily as a grinder, machine operator, first in the World War I work effort and subsequently until after World War II.
Oscar married Verolyn Knolf and raised a family of two, one boy and one girl.
Somewhere along the way Oscar became a hunting and fishing enthusiast. His favorites were both trout and game, being in the eastern U.P., between the Soo and Munising. It was said that hefished every trout stream in that area.
After World War II Oscar acquired a twin diesel engine boat, suitable for big game ocean fishing and commenced a charter fishing business, working out of Riveira Beach, Florida in the winters and in Brielle, New Jersey in the summers.
Thereafter he conducted a retail business, detailing in household furnishings until his retirement in 1965.
It was then that Oscar was really able to become involved in his first love and he became an inveterate trout fisherman for the rest of his life. In addition to his deep sea fishing in the Atlantic Ocean, he fished the country from Idaho to Maine and the New England states, as well as the upper reaches of Ontario, Qc, Canada.
At one time he traveled by train to the Hudson Bay area, acquired a canoe in which he fished for trout the entire distance back to Detroit, taking movies of the wonderful scenery.
His usual practice was to return all fish to the waters, saving the last ones only for his supper that day.
In his life in Grand Marais, Oscar was a contemporary of Rex Block, Harvey (Fitz) Roulo, Vernon Cameron, Sport Hill , Marguirite Block, Pearl Tellier, Parmer Maase, Faye Cameron and others of that age group.
In his later years, on his frequent visits to Grand Marais, his fishing buddy was Tivie Ollie.
Oscar died on January 3, 1983 from complications of surgery for colon cancer.
