The youngest child of the Louis J. La Faive family was Vern La Faive who was born in Grand Marais, Michigan on May 12, 1911. He was only six years old when the family moved to Detroit andwas thus able to complete all his education in the Detroit area. The first school he attended was St. John the Evangelist, next Our Lady of Sorrows eventually graduating from St. Catherine's High School in 1930.
Vern's main accomplishments in his lifetime were made in the sporting efforts, some football but primarily baseball where he achieved some degree of success. Vern was the star pitcher on the St. Catherine High School team, throwing a no-hitter in 1929 against St. Ambrose High School. He went on to pitch sandlot baseball and was a member of the Farm Crest nine, which won the national Class A Championship at Youngstown, Ohio in 1934. Vern played a prominent part in this endeavor as pitcher.
The Washington Senators signed him to a contract and he was sent to Chatanooga, Tenn., in the minor leagues for seasoning. However, a blood clot in his shoulder ended his baseball career. He worked for 20 years as a conveyor operator for the old Distel Tool and Machine Co., retiring in 1972. He continued to coach in American Legion, industrial and other amateur baseball leagues in Detroit. He coached Augie Bergamo, who played with the St. Louis Cardinals, and Bob Welsh, of the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was a member of the Detroit Baseball Old Timers Association and once was a potato chip route salesman for a company operated by former Detroit Tiger Roy Cullenbine and Bergamo. He married a school classmate, Marjorie Burke and had three children, two boys and one girl, Vern, Robert, and Catherine during their marriage. Marjorie predeceased Vern who died in 1986.
