Anecdote

Richard Earl LaFaive was the first son of Earl and Elizabeth LaFaive's six children. He attended St Catherine's and Guardian Angels Grade Schools, St Anthonys High School, and the University of Detroit.
Richard loved to play sports throughout his life, beginning with recognition as the Michigan Catholic Newspapers "Boy of the Week" award, playing football in the eigth grade. He was latersidelined with a broken collarbone the same season during a game.
In high school he received the award for All City Quarterback, and Honorable Mention All State.
During High school and grade school Dick had always played baseball. Dick received some training as a youth from his Uncle Vern LaFaive who had also achieved some success in pro ball playing with the Washington Senators. Dick always gave Vern credit for his ability at pitching.
In the summers Dick Played with the Firemens and American Legion Teams, winning distinction as a pitcher, pitching several no hitters and winning the National Championship. He caught the eye of several major league scouts and eventually was signed to play with the New York Giants farm team. Prior to signing Dick, the Giants invited him, with his parents to an all expense paid trip to New York. The three of them were guests of the Giants prior to their game, his parents in a box seat, and Dick allowed to warm up with the Giants before the game. He practiced in the outfield with Willy Mays who showed him how to do his famous "basket catch". His mother and father got to sit in a box seat with movie stars Loraine Day and Danny Kaye. Loraine Day was at the time married to Leo Derocher, manager of the Giants.
He received what was a substantial bonus in those days and was able to buy a car with the money.
In to his second season with the Giants he severly damaged his ankle sliding into the plate. The Giants had him returned to the medical center in New York where his ankle was reconstructed. This ended his season with the Giants. He played one additional season but decided to retire from baseball and returned to Detroit to marry (Nov. 3, 1956) and finish his schooling.
He eventually secured employment with Chrysler Corporation after briefly having a bread delivery route. He retired from Chrysler after approximately 48 years of employment. His last position was as Manager of the International Corporate Identity Office.
In retirement Dick volunteered at Mt Clemens General Hospital as a security guard and then hired on for a few years until he decided to stay home to care for his wife who was in ill health, another indication of his caring nature.
He raised a family of four girls and one boy. Also survived by 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Richard loved music, golf and boating.
He succumbed to bladder cancer after approximately one year.
